John Hauptman held an early private airplane pilot's license, owned
his own plane and maintained a landing field near Wesley, IA, in the
1920's. Late in that decade an organization of Iowa pilots organized
an airplane tour of the state of Iowa during which they would tour
the state in their planes as a group. They stopped at cities that
agreed to host their fly-ins. John Hauptman hosted one or more
air tour fly-ins at his air field southeast of Wesley. At that time,
airplanes were an intriguing novelty especially when close up and on
the ground. At one time a Ford tri-motor - like the one whick flew
Admiral Richard Byrd over the south pole - participated in the tour.
