Captain Thomas Pettus was the first member of the Pettus family to be born
in America. Date of birth is unknown but is thought to have been born at
Williamsburg, VA. Since he was a Vestryman of Bruton Church, he is believed
to have resided there during much of his life. There is still a memorial to
him in Bruton Church.
Captain Thomas Pettus was married twice, first to Elizabeth Dabney and by
her had the four children listed here. He was married a second time to
Mourning Glenn but there was no issue.
Circa 1698, Captain Pettus made a business trip to England. Either while
on a side trip to Holland or on his way back to America by way of Holland he
is believed to have died in Holland to have been buried there.
