William Pettus is listed as Esq & Gentleman. The marriage license for
William Pettus and Mary Gleane is dated Jul 17 1631. She was the daughter of
Sir Peter Gleane and his wife of Norfolk. On the floor of St Simon & Jude's
Church is an inscription to Mary Pettus with the date of her death as July 17
1631

Colonel Thomas Pettus, eldest son of William Pettus married Elizabeth
Durrant, the widow of Richard Durrant, in 1645
Colonel Pettus later came to America and left no sons in England so that
with the death of Sir Horatio Pettus in 1772, the male line of the Pettus
family became extinct in England.
About the year 1638, the Virginia colonists petitioned the London Company
for assistance in their struggles with the Indians. Sir John Pettus had been
a member of the company holding the 3rd charter to Virginia, and probably for
the sake of this relationship, Thomas Pettus, then serving on the Continent
with Sir Thomas Dale in the Thirty Years War, was selected and sent over in
command of forty men.
From that time on until his death, we find him frequently mentioned in
colonial records as being a member of the Virginia Council between the years
1640 and 1660. In a manuscript of Edmund Randolph, Colonel Thomas Pettus is
spoken of as one of the Council of States whose session was held at "James
Citie" on the 15th of March, 1659, during the administration of Sir William
Berkeley, Knt, Governeur and Captain-General of Virginia.
